The Walking Dead is an American horror drama series, based on the comic book series of the same name written by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore. Developed by Frank Darabont, the show made its American television debut on AMC on October 31, 2010. The following month saw it premiere internationally. During its first season, the show enjoyed excellent ratings and naturally, it got a nod for the subsequent seasons. In fact, it has registered some of the highest ratings for a cable series. On October 11, 2015, the sixth season of the series was broadcasted and the seventh season is to be aired in October of 2016.
There is a long list of cast members, given the storyline and the many seasons that the show has been on air. The main characters include Rick Grimes, whose character has been played by Andrew Lincoln. The other main cast members include Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Michael Rooker, Lauren Cohan, Emily Kinney, among many others.
The show starts with Rick Grimes, the sheriff’s deputy, lying in a coma moments after he is shot while on duty. However, he wakes up after a few months and finds himself in a hospital that is in a dilapidated condition. He quickly understands that the world he has woken up to is plagued with zombies, who are also known as ‘biters’ and ‘walkers’. He returns to his home, but does not find his son or his wife there. It is here that he meets the survivors of the pandemic, Morgan Jones and his son, Duane. They are the ones who explain everything to a perplexed Rick. They tell him that after people die, they have started turning into these zombies. They have the same body, but they are not really the same people. Their sole purpose is to spread that pathogen that drives them by biting healthy humans. Not only this, they eat any living thing, including humans.
This is a story that follows Rick Grimes and his constant efforts to save his son and the small number of survivors that are left from the dead shell of people, who were once their loved ones. They have to be on guard all time and armed, whether with a gun, screwdriver or anything else.
The show has successfully captured the imagination of its audiences and its top ratings are a testament to that. It has many disturbing and graphic scenes. But, the show itself is not merely about man-eating zombies and gruesome scenes. It also pays equal attention to the human relationships therein. Love, family, trust and other such issues form an indispensable part of the show. It is the ability of the people to react and survive in the most desperate of situations that drives the show’s popularity.
It obviously has many hard-hitting scenes, and that is not limited to the gruesome zombie attacks. The gut-wrenching difficult decisions that the characters have to take again and again, throughout the various seasons are not everyone’s cup of tea. It is also about the great survival instinct kicking in people that makes them a different person altogether.
